Synopsis:
1945 – As the Allies advanced, they were astounded to find children among the many German prisoners of war. Some 10,000 of these child soldiers were taken prisoner by the American army and sent to Attichy Camp in Oise, France, where they were separated from the adults in order to be re-educated in a special section called the “Baby Cages”.
They were regarded and treated as victims of the Nazi regime. A school was set up in the Baby Cages with lessons taught by theologians and teachers hand-picked from among the German POWs to steer the boys toward a spirit of tolerance and democracy.
Years later, Winfried Börsch, our central protagonist, told his daughter, the director of this film, the story of the “Baby Cages” where he was sent in the spring of 1945.
Now 92 years old, Winfried Börsch is one of the last surviving witnesses of this long-lost historical episode. He tells us his story which, for him, was a first step on the road to freedom.
